The Siesta chair, designed by Ingmar Relling in 1965. It earned him first prize at the Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing Industry Chair competition the same year. Siesta chair has stood the test of time as a stylish and comfortable piece of furniture, that is showcased in prestigious permanent collections across the globe. From the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and from Die Neue Sammlung in Munich to the Cooper-Hewitt in New York and the National Museum Oslo, this chair has left its mark in the world of design. Even former United States President Jimmy Carter saw the appeal, purchasing sixteen Siesta chairs to furnish the White House during his term. The simple construction and design have remained the same, but the materiality, cushion thickness, and general detailing have evolved with the trends. Despite its age, the Siesta chair remains an extraordinary comfortable and stylish piece of furniture that continues to be sought after.
This chair is a rare find - Following the factory's acquisition by Ekornes in 1997, original furniture stamped by Vestlandske effectively became a closed chapter in design history, leaving behind a strictly limited supply for collectors.
