RED and BLUE by Gerrit Rietveld
Pre-loved
€550.00
Few chairs make an entrance quite like this one. With its vivid red backrest, deep blue seat, graphic black framework, and unexpected yellow accents, this striking vintage piece turns furniture into architecture. The Red and Blue Chair (1918) designed by Gerrit Rietveld is a functional sculpture that transformed 20th-century design. Originally conceived in unpainted beechwood, Rietveld applied the iconic primary color scheme around 1923
Constructed entirely from standardized beechwood beech billets and beech plywood, the structure relies on overlapping lap joints secured with wooden dowels. The angled backrest and seat float independently within a linear wooden grid, allowing space to flow around and through the piece rather than occupying a solid volume. Each component maintains its individual identity without hidden structural joints, embodying Rietveld’s commitment to honest, visible craftsmanship.
