Design Heritage
The Barcelona Daybed (or Couch), designed in 1930 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (with Lilly Reich), is an iconic monument of the Modern Movement, embodying his principle of "Less is more." It is a piece of furniture that achieves maximum comfort and aesthetic impact through minimal, carefully selected materials.
Construction and Specifications
The original design's elegance lies in the contrast between industrial and natural materials:
Frame: A foundational hardwood (walnut) platform with a clear lacquer finish.
Support: 11 thick cowhide belting straps are stretched over a rubber webbing for resilient support.
Legs: A clean, minimalist base of tubular steel with a highly polished chrome finish.
Upholstery: The mattress and cylindrical bolster pillow are upholstered in exquisite leather. The signature detail is the 72 individual leather panels that are meticulously cut, hand-welted, and hand-tufted with buttons. The warmth of the leather contrasts beautifully with the cool gleam of the steel. The support straps have finished edges dyed to match the leather upholstery.
